PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting a face using a multiple detection mode and a method thereof are provided to detect a face by extracting a partial area in which a face exists from an input image, and detecting the face around the extracted area, without detecting the whole input image. CONSTITUTION: A face candidate area detection unit(20) extracts a skin color pixel from an image reduced in an image preprocessing unit(10), and extracts at least one skin color area by connecting adjacent skin color pixels, and detects at least one face candidate area on the basis of the extracted skin color area. A face discrimination unit(30) discriminate a final face area using face characteristics information from at least one detected face candidate area.
