<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rheology modifier with excellent stability in addition to high viscosity improvement and addition of thixotropy to an aqueous dispersion. <P>SOLUTION: The rheology modifier contains an alkyl-modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer, the alkyl-modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer including a monomer unit (a) represented by Formula (I), wherein the viscosity average degree of polymerization is 200-5,000, the saponification degree is 20-99.99 mol%, and the content of the monomer unit (a) is 0.05-5 mol%.
