<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately update a learning correction value without variation in the learning correction value for compensating for operation of a friction engagement element, even if torque fluctuation occurs caused by idling up. <P>SOLUTION: Target hydraulic pressure Pc to be supplied to a forward clutch 13 or a reverse brake 14 of a forward and backward travel switching mechanism 8 when a select lever is changed from a stop range (P, N) to a travel range (R, D), is set. The learning correction value Pλ compensating basic target hydraulic pressure Pm1 is set so that a necessary engagement time tm2 is within a second mode reference engagement time tmo that has been set in advance (S61-S64), wherein the period of the necessary engagement time tm2 is from the start of engagement of the forward clutch 13 with the reverse brake 14 to the completion of the engagement.
