The method involves heating of ashes to vitrification temperature by a set of burners using air as oxidant, where the air is enriched with oxygen or purified syngas (6) from a gasification unit (1), or biogas (23), or natural gas (24). The flue gases produced by the burners during combustion of the ashes are evacuated, and the ashes are cooled in a vitrification chamber (26). The ashes are directed towards the gasification unit at one or more points of the gasification unit having a gas treatment unit (14) upstream of the gasification unit.
