The vehicle has battery charger (120) which receives power from remote power distribution circuit for charging traction battery at rate selected in response to whether load other than battery charger is electrically connected with the power distribution circuit. The battery charger charges traction battery at specific rate when load other than charger is electrically connected with power distribution circuit and charges battery at rate greater than previous rate when load other than charger is not electrically connected with power distribution circuit. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) battery charging system; and (2) method for operating battery charger of vehicle.
