A detergent composition, suitable for the production of concentrated aqueous solutions, comprises 40-60 per cent by weight of a surface-active alkyl sulphate, particularly those sodium alkyl sulphates obtained by the process of Specification 657,598, [Group IV (b)], the remainder of the composition consisting of a mixture of alkylaryl sulphonates, a major proportion of which comprises sodium or ammonium alkylaryl sulphonate, or both, and a minor proportion of which comprises triethanolamine alkylaryl sulphonate. Preferably the composition comprises 50 per cent alkyl sulphate and 50 per cent mixed alkylaryl sulphonates, of which latter the triethanolamine salt should comprise at least 20 mols. per cent, and preferably one-third by weight. The preferred alkylaryl sulphonate is the dodecyl - (propylene tetramer) - benzene sulphonate. Sodium sulphate may also be present in the composition to an extent not exceeding 6 per cent.ALSO:Alkylaryl sulphonate mixtures, which comprise a major proportion of the sodium or ammonium salt, or both, and a minor proportion of the triethanolamine salt, are obtained by alkylating an aryl hydrocarbon and then sulphonating the product, with sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide or oleum in known manner, followed by neutralizing the sulphonic acid obtained with a mixture of the appropriate bases. The alkylaryl sulphonate is suitably derived from an alkylaryl hydrocarbon obtained by alkylating benzene, toluene, xylene, diphenyl, or naphthalene with olefins of 6-16 carbon atoms or more. The preferred example is dodecyl-(propylene tetramer)-benzene sulphonate. The amount of triethanolamine used to neutralize the acid is such that at least 20 mols. per cent, preferably one-third by weight, of the sulphonate obtained is the triethanolamine salt. Specification 657,598 is referred to. |
