PURPOSE: A parking assistance system and a method are provided to increase the utilization of space information, accuracy and effectiveness as the system provides the accurate distance information with surrounding obstacles and the accurate position of a vehicle through a display, and to prevent a collision with the surrounding obstacles. CONSTITUTION: A parking assistance system(100) comprises: a parking switch(110) which turns on and off by the manipulation of a user; an ECU(120) which receives distance information with surrounding obstacles from an ultrasonic sensor once the parking switch is turned on; and a communication section which transmits messages for a vehicle network with distance information and the ID of a display device through the vehicle network. A parking assistance method by the parking assistance system comprises: a step which receives distance information with surrounding obstacles from an ultrasonic sensor one the parking switch is turned on according to the manipulation of the user; and the step which transmits the messages for vehicle network with distance information and the ID of a display device to the display device through vehicle network.
