Electronic device and method for controlling the same are provided. The electronic device comprises a touch-sensitive screen, a storage device, and a controller. The storage device stores personal data. The controller detects contact with the touch-sensitive screen while the electronic device is in a user-interface lock state. When contact with the touch-sensitive screen is detected, the controller determines whether the detected contact corresponds to a predefined limited activation gesture. If the detected contact corresponds to the predefined limited activation gesture, the controller transitions the electronic device from the user-interface lock state to a limited activation state. When the electronic device operates in the limited activation state, the personal data stored in the storage device cannot be accessed.
