<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for determining an engine stop state in a hybrid vehicle capable of independently diagnosing an abnormal stop state of an engine in the hybrid vehicle, and thereby capable of preventing over-discharging of a battery. <P>SOLUTION: It is determined whether an entry condition has been satisfied for determining an engine stall. When the entry condition is satisfied, the presence of the engine stall is determined. When it is determined that the engine has stalled, a stall count is increased, and it is determined whether the engine enters a normal operation state. If the engine enters the normal operation state, the stall count is decreased.
