The method involves measuring instantaneous surface temperature of a glow plug by using a temperature model (1) during control in an operation of an internal combustion engine, where the temperature model is determined from actual values of voltage (Um) and resistances (Rm) of the glow plug, which are measured at the glow plug during the operation of the engine. Effective voltage acting on the glow plug is changed by the temperature model according to deviation in glow plug temperature with respect to target temperature of a glow plug surface.
