The method involves detecting a forthcoming collision of a motor car by a pre-crash system. A target guidance position of a steering wheel (220) of the motor car is determined. An overlay steering device of the motor car is actuated before entry of the collision to produce rotation of the steering wheel into the target guidance position. A position of hand of a driver at the steering wheel is detected. The target guidance position is determined based on the detected position of the hand. An airbag attached at the steering wheel is activated during detection of the collision. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for protecting a driver of a motor car (2) a motor car.
