A zoom lens includes, in order from the object side, a first lens group having a positive refracting power and fixed in position, a second lens group having a negative refracting power and movable in a direction of an optical axis for zooming, a third lens group having a positive refracting power, and a fourth lens group movable in the direction of the optical axis. The first lens group includes three lenses including a negative lens, a positive lens and another positive lens disposed in order from the object side to the image side and satisfies 7.0<ft/fw<13.0 and(1) 4.2<f1/fw<6.0(2) where fw and ft are the focal lengths of the entire lens system in a wide angle end state and a telephoto end state, respectively, and f1 the focal length of the first lens group.
