The method involves detecting first and second images, and recognizing a load loss if the images differ from each other by more than a predetermined threshold value. A warning signal is output if the load loss is recognized. A third image of a lateral region located beside a motor car (100) is detected. The detection of the load loss is suppressed if an object e.g. ball or animal, is represented by the third and second images. The driver is alerted to the object by an optical-, acoustic- and/or haptic signal. The images are detected by utilizing sensor systems (110-140) e.g. video cameras. The images are selected from video picture, ultrasound image and radar image. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a load loss in a motor car.
