Provided is a positive electrode active material for a lithium-ion battery that exhibits favorable battery properties. The positive electrode active material for a lithium-ion battery is represented by the following compositional formula: LixNi1-yMyO2+alpha. (In the formula, 0.9<=x<=1.2, 00.05.) Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) yields the following: the full width at half maximum of 2theta of the diffraction peak of a (003) surface is 0.14° or less.
