PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device where mechanical components in a device, such as a microelectromechanical device, and/or in an interferometric modulator are configured to be insusceptible to damage.

SOLUTION: A packaging system for an electronic device includes one or more spacers 730 that prevent or reduce damage to the electronic device arising from contact between the electronic device and a backplate 750. In addition, a packaged electronic device comprising spacers is thinner than a comparable electronic device manufactured without spacers.
