A lubricating oil additive consists of a polymer having a hydrocarbon backbone chain, a plurality of hydrocarbyl radicals containing at least 8 carbon atoms and a plurality of polar radicals comprising a mixture of hydroxyl, ester and thiophosphate groups. The additive may be produced by reacting the polyalcohol polyesters prepared as described in Specification 754,773 with a phosphorus sulphide. Conversion of the thiophosphate radicals to the metal salts thereof subsequently may be effected. In examples the polyalcohol polyesters are prepared by the partial hydrolysis of copolymers of C10 to C40 olefins with vinyl acetate or butyrate. The additives may be admixed with paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed base crude oils which also may comprise castor oil, lard oil, polymerized olefins, alkylene glycol/alkylene oxide copolymers and/or silicone polymers. Other conventional additives specified are metal dithiophosphates, metal organic sulphonates, metal thiocarbamates, amines, alkyl phenol, oil-soluble methacrylates, chlorinated paraffin wax/naphthalene condensates, esters, amides or amine salts of chloromethane phosphonic acids, and organic sulphides. Specification 793,608 also is referred to.
