863,834. Nuclear fusion reactors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 27, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 24773/58. Class 39(4). A nuclear fusion reactor of the kind in which a heavy electrical current is induced along the circumferential axis of a toroidal container enclosing a light gas, comprises an array of primary conductors extending along the torus and spaced apart around the section of the torus so that when current flows through the conductors their magnetic fields substancancel in the discharge space within the toroidal container. There may 'be eight primary conductors wound round the large circumference of the torus parallel to its axis, Fig. 2 (hot shown), and the conductors may be connected in series, in parallel, or in seriesparallel. The conductors may be helically wound, and as shown in Fig. 3 two primary windings P1, P2 may be interleaved. The windings can twist about the torus axis uniformly or in steps, and flux along the axis due to the twist or steps can be avoided by arranging the windings in two layers each with opposite twists, Fig. 4 (not shown), or by providing shorting bands around the small diameter of the torus in the region of the twists or steps, Fig. 5 (not shown). |
