A food preparation for encouraging growth of Lactobacillus bifidus in the intestines of infants contains 0.25-7 g. of lactulose per 70 cal. of combustion value, the preparation being incorporated with a protein food in quantity so that the weight of lactulose and lactose to that of protein is 2.6 or more. The lactulose employed may be a product containing lactose or may be crystalline lactulose. Vitamins, lactic acid, salts and fats may be incorporated in the food preparation. An example is concerned with a water-soluble formulation of crystalline lactulose or a dry 80-90% lactulose concentrate, whole milk powder, lactose and Vitamins A, D and C, and another example with a formulation of crystalline lactulose or the lactulose concentrate, lactose, soluble starch, dextrin-maltose and Vitamins A, D and C, for incorporation in whole milk.
