<p>Tongue depressor 11 made of a resilient plastics material comprising pair of blades 12, 13 which are approximately at right angles to each other. Blade 12 is flat and is used for depressing the tongue. Blade 13 serves as a handle. Blades 12, 13 are joined by curved section 14 that is thicker than blades 12, 13. Curved section 14 may be tapered and may extend over 25-30% the length of each blade 12, 13. Curved section 14 may be 2-3 times the thickness of blades 12, 13. Blades 12, 13 may be 3-4 mm thick. One of blades 12, 13 may be shorter than the other and may comprise curved portion 15 which serves as a finger stop when used as a handle. Tongue depressor 11 may be made of a nylon material such as nylon 6 or nylon 6,6 and may be reinforced with carbon fibre. Tongue depressor 11 may be packed sterilized using ethylene oxide. Tongue depressor 11 is a Lacks tongue depressor that can be made in plastics materials which is acceptably similar with respect to mechanical properties as a conventional stainless steel instrument.</p> |
