In an immersion heater of the kind adapted to be inserted into the wall of a tank containing the liquid to be heated, the immersion heater having a sheathed wire electric heating element supported in a header 4, Fig. 2, adapted to be screwed into an opening in the tank or in a mounting flange 8 secured to the tank, the sheath of the heating element being hermetically secured to the header, the header 4 is an annular member having a screw threaded annular extension 5 through which the header is adapted to be secured to a mounting flange 8, the heating element being supported from the header by having its sheath hermetically secured through openings in a metal plate 10 which is clamped to an annular shoulder formed on the header within the screw threaded extension 5, so that the metal plate is angularly adjustable with respect to the header after the header has been screwed home within the mounting flange. Header 4 is of metal or synthetic plastic, e.g. polyamide or polyolefine. If of metal a gasket is provided between 4 and 8. If of plastic 4 has peripheral projections or corrugations so there is no leakage 10-4 and 4-8. Header 4 screws into mounting flange 8. The sheathed wire heating element has an outer metal sheath enclosing compacted refractory mineral insulation and 3 is a thermostat. The heating element and thermostat 3 are welded or soldered to plate 10 at 11. Metal mounting plate 10 is seated against shoulder 13 of header 4 and held there by clamping plate 14 and bolts 15. If 4 is of insulating material, 6 is a knurled flange for screwing home in header 4, then the heating element and thermostat 3 are adjusted angularly after which bolts 15 are tightened. If 4 is of metal 6 is replaced by an octagonal rim so it can be tightened with a spanner. Projection 20 is not required but is replaced by a gasket: 10, 5 have conical abutting surfaces and a washer is inserted 10-13. 14 does not have a curved rim. The heating element may be of cranked form, Fig. 4 (not shown) or curved, Fig 5 (not shown). There may be more than one heater and the heater need not be U-shaped. A thermostat 3 is arranged above the heater. In a modification metal plate 10 and clamping plate 14 abut opposite sides of a shoulder on header 4.
