A plasma generator for producing a continuous beam of plasma, e.g. for use in thermonuclear reactors or as a source of electrons and ions, consists of an anode cylinder 11 within which the plasma is formed, two electrodes 22 and 27 held at a negative potential, electrode 27 constituting the outlet for the plasma beam, and solenoids 41 to 44 for setting up an axial magnetic field which rises in intensity to a peak within the anode cylinder. A further solenoid 46 surrounds the outlet electrode 27. The action of the magnetic field is to confine the plasma and also to expel plasma from the anode cylinder through the outlet electrode 27 by a type of magnetic mirror effect. The negative electrode 22 includes a disc 23 and gas is supplied through a pipe 24 to the rear of the disc whence the gas migrates through one or more minute apertures in the centre of the disc into the anode cylinder. The flange connections between the electrodes are slanted to prevent the changed particles from striking the insulators 17, 33. O-rings are associated with the insulators to preserve the vacuum.
