A graft polymer is prepared by admixing 60%-95% vinylidene chloride with a water soluble polymerizable monocarboxylic acid which has been previously partly polymerized in the aqueous phase, with a content of emulsifier, by means of a redox system, together with, or immediately after the addition of, a quantity of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid ester and/or vinyl acetate which together with the monocarboxylic acid provide the remaining 40%-5%, the quantity of monocarboxylic acid being less than that of the ester and/or acetate. The redox system may be sodium bisulphite-ammonium persulphate and the emulsifier may be an alkyl benzene sulphonate. The water-soluble polymerizable monocarboxylic acid may be acrylic acid and the acrylic and/or methacrylic acid ester may be the methyl ester. |
