An apparatus 100 is provided comprising: a sensor unit 101; and a communications interface 102. The communications interface 102 is configured to receive a measurement of an environmental state from the sensor unit 101, and send a signal related to the measurement to a user programmable portable computing device 103. The environmental state may be a presence and/or quantity of carbon monoxide or smoke. The apparatus may be handheld or may be configured to be attached to a keyring. The device may comprise a mobile telephone or PDA.
