The method for controlling the gear ratios of a motor vehicle fitted with an automatic gearbox involves receipt (101) of a requested gear ratio instruction. The method involves receipt (102) of information relating to the gear ratios that are unavailable and determining the gear ratio that needs to be applied to take account of the gear ratios that are unavailable.
