PURPOSE: 0.1-2%(v/v) of phytoncide is provided to remarkably reduce airway hyperreactivity and penetration of cells into bronchus, and to prevent or treat asthma. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating asthma contains 0.1-2%(v/v) of phytoncide as an active ingredient. Phytoncide is extracted from one kind of plant selected from the group consisting of Pinus koraiensis, Pinus densiflora, Chamaecyparia obtuse, Chamaecyparis pisifera (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl., and Rutaceae family plants by an extraction method selected from the group consisting of hot water extraction, enfleurage, reflux cooling extraction, reflux condensation, solvent extraction, supercritical extraction, distillation, sonication, elution, and compression. An inducer for immunotolerance contains 0.1-2%(v/v) of phytoncide as an active ingredient, which promotes IL-10 generation.
