A sewing machine assembly 10, for securing a support member 16 which has first and second portions 30, 32 which differ from one another within a casing member 18 and subsequently the support 16 and casing 18 combination to a textile work piece (44, figure 3a), comprises a needle assembly 12 and a sensor 28. Needle assembly 12 includes at least one needle 14 movable through needle plate 20 which supports the casing 18 and work piece (44). A controller controls movement of the needles 14 through the needle plate 20 and advancement of the work. The needles 14 define a work piece datum Dwp. Sensor 28 is spaced from the work piece datum by a distance D1 and detects the transition 42 between portions 30, 32 of the support 16 which lies within the casing 18, and the controller inhibits advancement of the casing 18 and the support 16 to position the transition 42 relative to the work piece datum Dwp. The work piece (44) may then be placed against the needles or threads to locate it relative to the datum and the transition. The work piece, casing and support may then be advance through the machine to be stitched together with correct positioning of the support member relative to an associated work piece. The support member may be used in a bra or other breast support.
