<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compound exhibiting thermal stability, excellent dielectric properties and a relatively low viscosity, and a liquid crystal medium. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal compound is represented by formula (1), wherein R1 is H, a 1-10C alkyl group or a 2-10C alkenyl group, each -(CH<SB POS="POST">2</SB>)- being unsubstituted or substituted with -O-, -CO-, -COO- or -OCO- and a hydrogen atom on an alkyl group or an alkenyl group being optionally replaced by a fluorine atom; A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>, A<SB POS="POST">2</SB>, A<SB POS="POST">3</SB>and A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>are each independently selected from the group consisting of 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene and 2,5-tetrahydropiranylene; and at least one of A<SB POS="POST">1</SB>, A<SB POS="POST">2</SB>, A<SB POS="POST">3</SB>and A<SB POS="POST">4</SB>is indane-2,5-diyl. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
