PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for visualizing data sets are provided to reduce time for visualizing an arbitrary large data set partly uncompleted and/or continuously updated. CONSTITUTION: The number of displayable clusters of spatially adjacent elements of a data set is determined(10,11,12). At least a part of the elements of the data set is retrieved(14). The retrieved elements of the data set and the elements of the data set which are not retrieved are clustered into a determined number of clusters(15). The retrieved elements of the data set which are not retrieved are represented by using placeholders. A cluster value is assigned to each cluster and visualized on a display(17,18).
