DRUM-TYPE WASHING MACHINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum-type washing machine that is advantageous by being able to accommodate demand for a variable damping force and can achieve an effective damping force even when a failure occurs in a variable damping force suspension.

SOLUTION: A drum-type washing machine according to the present embodiment includes a water tub disposed within a housing and housing a drum that is rotatable about a horizontal axis; and a plurality of suspensions supporting the water tub at the bottom of the housing in a vibration-proof manner. The plurality of suspensions each include a tubular cylinder, a bearing incorporated in the cylinder, a shaft inserted through the bearing so as to reciprocate relatively in accordance with vibration of the water tub, and a fixed damping force suspension fixed within the cylinder and having a friction member causing a damping force resisting the reciprocation of the shaft to act on the shaft. At least one of the fixed damping force suspensions is formed as a variable damping force suspension additionally provided with damping force generating means that is controlled to be on and off to cause a damping force to act on the shaft when the damping force generating means is on.
