<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact machine tool for machining a periphery and an end of a shaft-shaped workpiece. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the machine tool which machines a rotationally driven workpiece 8, the machine tool includes: a frame 1 having two vertical parallel sidewalls 4, 4' and a front wall 7 which is similarly vertical; a work tool spindle 2 and a tailstock 11 attached thereto, and a tool holder 3 having a tool 13 for periphery machining. The workpiece spindle 2 and tailstock 11 are provided to travel in a vertical direction (Z axis) along the sidewall 4 for feed operation in a guide 5, and the tool holder 3 is provided to travel in a horizontal direction (X axis) along the front wall 7 for conveying operation in a guide rail 14.
