In spinning yarn from slivers of staple or natural fibres by means of a hollow spinning roller having retaining needles on its inner periphery, fibres are combed out of the sliver, in an opening roller and carried by an air stream to be deposited over the needles of the spinning roller whence fibres are withdrawn as twisted yarn. In Fig. 1, the spinning-roller 1 is formed as a cup by a flange 1a and rotates in a housing 2, being mounted on a spindle 47 with a whorl 3. A feed roller 11 and an opening-roller 12 are each provided with needles 15, 16 and are mounted in a housing having an aperture 43. Roller 12 communicates with the cup of roller 1 by a passage 17; when air is drawn out of housing 2, a current is set up through aperture 43, apertures 19 in roller 12, passage 17 and apertures 21 in roller 1, so that as a sliver 14 is fed by roller 11 to be opened by the needles on roller 12, fibres are drawn through passage 17 to be laid on teeth at 1a on the inner periphery of roller 1. Air is also drawn in through a central nozzle 7 in roller 1; when a piece of twisted yarn is inserted therein it is drawn into a space between the body of roller 1 and a flange 6 on the housing 2, and when it reaches the layer of fibres on the inside of flange 1a begins to twist off fibres as the roller rotates in the form of a continuous twisted yarn which can be withdrawn and wound up on a reel. The flange 6 defines with the inner wall of housing 2, a groove 6a which serves to keep the fibres travelling through passage 17 separate from the twisted yarn. Two or more openings and feed rollers may feed to the spinning-roller, so that yarns composed of mixed fibres may be formed, the composition of the yarn being raised by periodically stopping one or other of the feed rollers. The twist imparted may be supplemented by a false twister positioned at or after the nozzle 7; this may take the form shown in Fig. 5 where the false-twist is imparted by the twisted yarn rolling in grooves 33a. Arrangements of a belt and a tensioning-pulley are described for driving the false-twister from the shaft which drives the whorl 3. An arrangement is also described where a number of spindles 47 are arranged in a common housing and two such housings are arranged one on each side of a central shaft two spindles in each housing being driven by a common belt. An electric-stop-motion may be provided to de-clutch the feed roller when a sliver fails or is absent, and the current of air out of the housing 2 may be generated merely by the rotation of the roller 1. |
