<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine in which stable layered combustion can be secured by surely generating rich mixed gas around an ignition plug. <P>SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 1 of an in-cylinder direct injection type comprises: an ignition plug 8 facing the vicinity of the center of a combustion chamber 7; and a fuel injection valve 9 including a plurality of injection ports H1-H4 for obliquely injecting a plurality of fuel mists toward a top surface of a piston 5 in different directions during a compression step. A cavity 6 on the top surface of the piston 5 has a bottom face 6a, a perpendicular wall 6b near the center of the piston 5, and a pair of sidewalls 6c, 6c continued at both sides of the perpendicular wall 6b and extending to the side of the fuel injection valve 9. The plurality of mists include: a first mist FM1 injected toward the perpendicular wall 6b of the cavity 6 and an adjacent part 5a of the top surface of the piston 5; a pair of second mists FM2, FM2 injected toward the sidewalls 6c, 6c; and a third mist FM3 colliding with the bottom face 6a, moving up and directing the first and second mists FM1 and FM2 toward the side of the ignition plug 8. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
