Sulfurated and sulfonated aromatic alkane compounds (I) are new. Sulfurated and sulfonated aromatic alkane compounds of formula (E1-Ar1-x1-(CH 2) n-X2-Ar2-E2) (I) are new. X1, X2 : S, SO or SO 2; Ar1, Ar2 : a phenylene group, where one of Ar1 and Ar2 carries a sulfonic group or sulfonate group of formula (-SO 3M); M : alkaline metal cation; E1, E2 : electrophilic function; and n : 1-20. Independent claims are included for: (1) synthesizing a sulfurated aromatic alkane polymer, comprising polycondensing (I); and (2) the sulfurated aromatic alkane polymer resulting from (I).
