<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing a damage of a surface of an image carrier and a transfer body. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided an image forming apparatus which comprises: an intermediate transfer belt 31; a secondary transfer belt 42; a paper conveyance path 52; cleaning members 351 and 43; and CPU 210. The paper conveyance path 52 is disposed so that each of contact surfaces of pickup rollers 531 and 541 of paper faces each of the intermediate transfer belt 31 and the secondary transfer belt 42. The CPU 210 determines an amount of toner for cleaning supplied to the intermediate transfer belt 31 and the secondary transfer belt 42 on the basis of the number of paper supplied by facing the contact surfaces to the intermediate transfer belt 31 and the secondary transfer belt 42. The CPU 210 forms a toner image for cleaning on the intermediate transfer belt 31 to switch the application of a transfer voltage to a secondary transfer roller 41 and stop of the application on the basis of the determined amount of toner for cleaning.
