<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of harmful malodor gas upon casting, further, to suppress insertion, seizure or the like without requiring a lubricant, and to improve the cast skin of a casting. <P>SOLUTION: The surface of a refractory aggregate is coated with a binding layer including saccharide as a binding component and a carbonaceous material to prepare a binder-coated sand. The saccharide included in the binding layer as a binding component is decomposed by the heat of molten metal upon casting to generate a large quantity of gas, and the largely generated gas forms a barrier between the surface of the mold and the molten metal to prevent the direct contact of the high temperature molten metal with the surface of the mold. Further, inferiority in the wetness between the mold and the molten metal can be increased by the carbonaceous material included in the binding layer. In this way, insertion, seizure or the like are suppressed without requiring a lubricant, and the cast skin of a casting can be improved.
