A method of coating a continuously moving core rod 2 comprises passing the rod through a drawing means 3, into an evacuated passage defined by shaving means 4 (for removing oxide, and other surface, contamination), tube 5, housings 6 and 8 and tube 25, into a nozzle 29 extending upwardly into a crucible 26 containing molten copper containing less than 20 p.p.m. of oxygen. After leaving the crucible <PICT:0964914/C6-C7/1> 26 cooling means 44, e.g. spray nozzles, may be provided, and the coated rod 2 is led via a shock isolation loop 45 to a take up means (not shown). The molten copper is supplied to crucible 26 by furnace 31, which may be heated by induction, and, if the oxygen content is too high, it is purified by use of a reducing agent, e.g. phosphorus or preferably carbon in the form of graphite, under the cover of an inert gas such as nitrogen supplied through line 411. Specification 829,192 is referred to.
|
