This medium recognition device is for recognizing a medium being conveyed, and is equipped with: a conveyance unit that drives a certain power source in order to convey a medium; a line sensor that is provided in a line in an intersecting direction with respect to the medium conveyance direction in order to read at least a partial appearance of the medium being conveyed; a medium image acquisition unit that obtains a medium image which is an image generated on the basis of a signal obtained from the line sensor; an operating unit that operates according to the actual conveyance speed at which the medium is actually conveyed; an operation image acquisition unit that obtains an operation image which is an image generated by reading the operating unit at a predetermined interval while the medium image acquisition unit is reading the medium; a parameter acquisition unit that analyzes the operation image in order to obtain a parameter which reflects the actual conveyance speed; and a medium recognition unit that recognizes the medium image on the basis of the obtained parameter. Consequently, behavior of the medium can be highly accurately recognized.
