The device (10) has a base station which has a transceiver that is positioned in the vicinity of a vehicle (18), where the transceiver is operated at an operating frequency to send a signal to or from a portable wireless-terminal and to determine a distance of the portable wireless-terminal with respect to the vehicle. The operating frequency corresponds to a value of the accuracy of the distance and corresponds to the distance in generally a rear distance of the portable wireless-terminal to the vehicle. An independent claim is included for a method for determining a position of a portable wireless-device with respect to a vehicle.
