The method involves detecting an electrical variable of battery cells (12) under consideration of environmental conditions, where the electrical variable is selected from internal resistance, energy storage capacity and voltage (18) of the battery cells and/or a vehicle battery (10). One of the battery cells is closed depending on a change of the electrical variable on an unauthorized exchange. The energy storage capacity of the battery cells and/or the battery is detected based on nominal load and the voltage applied to the battery cells and/or the battery. An independent claim is also included for a battery.
