PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition excellent in impact resistance and response quickness and to provide a response time accelerator for a ferroelectric liquid crystal used therein.

SOLUTION: There is provided a response time accelerator for a ferroelectric liquid crystal, comprising a chiral compound having a phenylpyrimidine skeleton and, optionally, like compounds. The chiral groups are exemplified by groups represented by general formula (2) (wherein R33is a 1-4C saturated or unsaturated alkyl or alkoxyalkyl group which may be substituted with a halogen atom; Y31is -CH3or a fluorine atom; and the atom marked with * is a chiral center).
