The illumination system (1) has transparent plate (2) having surfaces and an edge. A transparent layer (3) having a photo-luminescent material is formed on first surface of the transparent plate. An emitting device (4) emits UV light (5) to transparent layer so that the photoluminescent material emits light having wavelength perceptible by the human eye by irradiation with UV light.
