The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device provided with a horizontally oriented liquid crystal layer, sub-spacers, and an optical-orientation film, and able to suppress the occurrence of disclination. The liquid crystal display device is provided with: a pair of substrates that face each other; and a horizontally oriented liquid crystal layer provided between the pair of substrates. At least one of the pair of substrates includes an optical-orientation film; at least one of the pair of substrates includes a plurality of sub-spacers; the plurality of sub-spacers do not contact the facing substrate under atmospheric pressure; in a cross section of each of the plurality of sub-spacers, the thickness of each of the plurality of subspacers monotonically increases and then monotonically decreases from one end to the other.
