<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus that can avoid error detection due to external light without causing a decrease in the sensitivity of a sheet detection sensor and without causing an increase in the size of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The printing apparatus includes: a conveyance path along which a recording sheet is conveyed; a conveyance device for conveying the recording sheet; a detector disposed at a portion of the conveyance path, and for optically detecting a position of the recording sheet; and an opening formed in the conveyance path, and through which at least a portion of the recording sheet is exposed to the outside. The printing apparatus is provided with a light shield at least between the detector and the opening along the conveyance path.
