Gaseous ethylene is polymerized in the presence of an organo-metallic catalyst formed by adding a solution of an alkyl or aryl halide to metallic sodium finely dispersed in an inert liquid at about - 10 DEG C. and adding a heavy metal chloride activator in the same solvent to the reaction product at a higher temperature whereby a solution or suspension containing about 1% of catalyst is obtained, the ethylene being fed to the solution whilst it is agitated at 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. A benzene fraction of boiling-point above 115 DEG C. is the preferred inert liquid, sodium amyl the catalyst and titanium tetrachloride the activator.
