In an apparatus for reducing the thickness of a material by passing the material through a pair of opposed rolls, the tension in the material and the separation setting of the rolls are controlled by means responsive to the strain in the opposed rolls and the separation setting so as to maintain the reduced thickness constant. In a cold-rolling mill having opposed rollers 2, 3 between which a strip 6 is reduced, and backing-up rollers 4, 5, the upper backing-up roller 5 is slidably mounted in plummer blocks 7 and positioned by a screw-down motor 11 through gearing 10. A signal from a straingauge 13, sensing strain on the backing-up roller 5, is fed to a summating and amplifying circuit 23 and added to a signal from a transmitter 15 sensing the separation setting of the rollers. The summated signal is compared with a signal from a gauge setting circuit 24, representative of the desired thickness, and the resultant error signal is fed to a circuit 25. The circuit 25 comprises a manually-adjustable gate and a manually-adjustable limit circuit. The gate circuit operates the screw-down motor 11 when the error signal exceeds a predetermined value and the limit circuit feeds a signal to a tension controller 21, operating motors 19, 20, when the error signal is below a predetermined value. A signal from a manually-adjustable tension signal generator 22 is fed to the controller 21 to maintain the tension in the strip between predetermined limits. A signal from thickness gauges 26 operates a visual indicator, not shown, or is fed to circuit 23. Either motor 19, 20 operates as a drag generator depending on the direction of travel of the strip.
