The invention relates to a radiation-emitting semi-conductor chip (1) having a substrate (5) and a semi-conductor body (2) arranged on said substrate and with a semi-conductor layer sequence which comprises an active region (23) provided for producing radiation, an n-type region (21), and a covering layer (24) arranged on a side of the n-type region that faces away from said active region. There is a contact structure (4) arranged on the covering layer for the external electrical contacting of the n-type region, and said covering layer has at least one recess (3) through which said contact structure extends to the n-type region. Moreover, the invention discloses a method for producing a semi-conductor chip.
