A starting and operating circuit for highpressure vapour arc lamps comprises a resistor, composed substantially of nickel in series with the parallel combination of a capacitor and a lamp, with the coil of a pulse system connected in a supply lead between the capacitor and the lamp. An alternating supply is fed via the leads 1, 2 and the resistor 4 to the lamp 3 and the transformer 13. Initially the resistor 4 has a low value but the voltage across the lamp 3 is too low to strike an arc. The voltage on the secondary 12 of the transformer 13 causes sparking across the gap 11 and radio frequency energy is fed to the lamp 3 via the capacitor 8, the R. F. transformer 6, 7 and the capacitor 5. The R.F. energy ionizes the vapour in the lamp and starts it operating, whereupon sparking at the gap 11 ceases since the volt drop across the lamp, and hence the voltage applied to the transformer 13, is too low. The heavy current taken by the lamp 3 causes the resistance of the resistor 4 to rise until the lamp reaches its optimum condition. The resistor 4 may consist of a helix or a coiled coil wound on a ceramic former. |
