A pulsed laser apparatus (Figure 1) comprises a gain medium (15, Figure 1) and at least one energy source (laser diode 40) for providing energy to the gain medium. The apparatus is configured to selectively provide thermal compensation energy (TCE, 70a, 70b, 70c) which may be produced in a greater amount for a predetermined time after start-up from the energy source to the gain medium when the thermal load of the gain medium and/or a pulse rate of the apparatus is below an optimum value. The device may have a Q-switch. The thermal compensation energy may also be reduced after a predetermined time after start up until the system reaches steady state conditions
|
