The present invention relates in general to a portable device, and more specifically, to a portable device for the verification of the winning status of a lottery ticket. The present invention describes a portable device for verifying a winning status of a lottery ticket, comprising a data input device, a data output device, a wireless network interface, and a processor adapted to receive information related to the lottery ticket via the data input device, receive information related to the winning status of the lottery ticket via the wireless network interface, and provide an indication of the winning status of the lottery ticket via the data output device. The present invention also describes a method for verifying a winning status of a lottery ticket, comprising receiving the lottery ticket information on a portable device, transmitting the lottery ticket information from the portable device to a lottery ticket server, receiving the winning status of the lottery ticket from the lottery ticket server, and providing an indication of the winning status of the lottery ticket from the portable device to a user.
