[Also in Group XXIX] A governor for use in a change-speed control system and establishing a fluid pressure related to the speed of rotation of a member 12, comprises a valve body 60 connected to the member 12 and formed with a pressure supply passage 82 and a governed pressure passage 84, a valve spool 72 subjected to centrifugal force and loaded by the governed pressure, and means for changing the effective area of the spool on which the governed pressure acts when the rotational speed exceeds a predetermined value. The means consists of a piston 100 connected by a spring 108 with the valve spool 72 and subjected through passages 98, 94 to the governed pressure so that the loading due to the same pressure acting through the difference in area between lands 74, 76 on the valve spool itself is reduced. At the predetermined speed the piston 100 engages a washer 90 fixed in the valve body 60 to change the pressure-speed relationship. The spring 108 may be preloaded and the valve body which also contains an exhaust passage 86, is connected by bolts 68 to a balance weight 62 located on the member 12 by a snap ring (not shown) and a ball 66 acting as a key. The member 12 contains passages for the supply of fluid to the valve, the supply of governed pressure to a change-speed gear, and a passage 34 for clutch-actuating fluid.
